Hypnotherapy is about the successful resolution of internal conflict and any competent therapist will assist you in your pursuit of this goal. The British Medical Association (BMA) commissioned a committee that reported on the phenomenon of hypnosis in its 1892 Hypnotism Report. The report said that the committee was satisfied with the genuineness of the condition and that they observed mental changes like altered consciousness and increased suggestibility, as well as physical changes like flushing, altered pulse rate and deeper breathing.

The hypnotism report was published in the British Medical Journal and in it the committee found that hypnotism was useful as a therapeutic agent for relieving pain, procuring sleep and alleviating many functional ailments.

Hypnotism was legally acknowledged and defined by the Hypnotism Act 1952 and in 1955 a follow-up report endorsed earlier conclusions. The 1955 report added that hypnotism was of value and may be the treatment of choice in some cases of so-called psycho-somatic disorder and psycho-neurosis. In addition, the report said it may be of value in revealing unrecognised motives and conflicts in such conditions.

A significant number of issues like stopping smoking and phobias are frequently resolved with between one and three sessions, but some clients prefer a little more to re-enforce their new chosen behaviour. It can take more sessions to resolve more deep-seated issues but half-hour sessions can be equally beneficial after the first two or three.

When a client experiences emotional or behavioural difficulties, the problem can be a habitual inappropriate response to a stress stimulus. Hypnotherapy seeks to induce the client into a very relaxed state (or trance), and then guide the subconscious through the process of finding alternative responses to the stress stimulus. Once the client finds new responses and develops them into a habit (by repetition and/or self-hypnosis) problem issues frequently diminish or disappear.

The self-help techniques explain how lifestyle changes can be enjoyable and easy to achieve. In addition, clients learn a self-hypnosis procedure on their first session and are encouraged to practice at home assessing their own level of improvement after each self-hypnosis session or hypnotherapy treatment. Group sessions are available for weight and smoking issues.
